Growth

Sailing smoothly in the inclement IT weather, the Software Technology Park of India (STPI), Mohali, has registered a tenfold growth in the past four fiscals, exporting software worth Rs 7 crore in 1998-99, when it was set up, to Rs 71 crore in the year 2001-2002.

This is not, however, something that’s keeping the STPI satisfied. “We had expected our exports to touch Rs 150 crore. The drop was primarily because of the prevailing global recession and the terrorist attacks on America on September 11, 2001. There were no new IT outsourcing jobs from the US market after that.

The business through STPI registered a growth of around 40 per cent in 2000-2001, with software exports totalling Rs 53 crore, in comparison to Rs 14 crore in 1999-2000. Interestingly, as compared to Punjab, where the IT sector is slack, Chandigarh is contributing in a significant way.

The responsibilities of the state government include providing stateof-the-art infrastructure, developing IT parks, pursuing an attractive IT policy and doing aggressive marketing for the region, sources added.

The STPI on the other hand is responsible for regulating IT policy and providing infrastructural support for data communication. The exports through the STPI, Mohali, include ERP solutions, customized software solutions, desktop publishing software, medical transcriptions, customer support centers, multimedia solutions and Catcam solutions.

Companies like Infosys, Quark Media, IDS Infotech, Smartdata, Tata Interactive Solutions, Networld have contributed a lot in the growth of software exports from the region.
